Devonte has solid temperament that displayed beautiful uphill movement and front end extension before the crowd during his Keuring.  The crowd clearly saw what was before them.  You can see for yourself here.

Devonte needed to be clipped to go to his Keuring and he is so quiet we could go out to the field and clip him without a halter or lead on him.  He just stood there quietly, even getting his ears trimmed out.

Devonte is living up to the reputation of his full brother Bojka and as Paul says he thinks we have "two bookends".  They are going to be a matched team for sure. I will try and get some photos of him moving, with the same total body balance and control his brother exhibited when we first saw him in Holland.  Either a horse has it or they don't, and this boy has it!!!

When he starts to move he uses his back and arches his neck and he prances and dances like he is the "star" of his own show.  Watch for more updates of this on his webpage, as I just need to carry the camera with me more often.  He has that chiselled head and the identical eyes of his brother.

Devonte BRF is all stallion, from the moment he was born.  His demeanour exudes great confidence and he is so well muscled, he gives off this "see me" attitude.  He walks right up to you in the field to be led into the stable each day. You can brush him absolutely anywhere, although it is imperative to keep the brush actively moving, so he will stand calmly and soak up the "moment" otherwise he tends to keep you on your toes. Brushing his mane does not qualify as being entertaining enough and you have to remind him of his manners, generally at that point.  He is learning stall behaviour, to give us space and respect to us.  He has had a blanket put on him already.

Do you think he looks like his sire?  Look at those crests in the neck.

Below is a picture of his sire, Tsjerk.

First 3 Weeks in Devonte's Life

Devonte BRF, has proven to be of extremely high level intelligence, besides being absolutely being stunning to look at.  He has figured out that if he stands on an almost 1ft. high salt block, that he is able to drink water from his mother's water bowl.  If he turns his butt, backs up and places it just underneath the square bucket that we hang over the open grill of the door, to feed his mother, that in between the time his mother is finished eating and the time we remove it off the door, that if he backs up to the door & raises his butt, just enough in the air, he can pop the rubber bucket on the floor, so he can get his head into the bucket and clean the bucket out of any leftover feed.  He has also achieved an identical trick, that his full brother would do, in that he has undone his mother's halter twice already in his 3rd week of life.  Prior to getting the bucket off the door, he would lick the edge of his mother's bucket, which would promptly get him bunted out of the road, by his mother, as she knew that all he needed was mother's milk.  From his first week of life, he has not just been mouthing the hay but attempting to eat hay, which also got him pushed out of the hay, by his mother, who has finally just given up putting him out of the hay, as he is right back into her hay pile.  Devonte loves bear hugs, patting, brushing and anything else you care to do with him.  Instead of having a foal that you have to draw out from behind his mother, we have foal that we have to insist on staying in his own space.

We are very happy to announce the arrival of our Tsjerk x Olaf 2009 colt, born February 23 at 2 a.m.  His registered name will be Devonte BRF (pronounced Day-von-tay).  He is a full brother to our 2008 colt, Bojka, who went 1st Premie, Reserve Champion, for the day at his Keuring in Kootwijk Holland.

Devonte, after 1/2 hour after being born walked around for a full hour and nursed completely on his on accord.  He is already extremely social and loves to get patted and scratched.  He will walk up quite freely up to humans to get attention.  He even pretends to eat hay, standing beside his dam, Xandra.  Xandra is a super mother.  She is very happy to have our family handle her foal, as long as he is within view, which we make sure happens.  For his age, he does not really sleep long, as he likes to be walking around investigating things.  He is so co-ordinated that he can scratch his flank.  He was never wobbly, as he got up the first time he tried to stand.

His 2nd day, he was zipping around the stall and couldn't care how deep the straw was.
